The Aethernet

Meetups, classifieds,
watch parties, Gamba.

The same network that runs the feeds also runs meetups, a classifieds board, watch parties and a play-money casino. Each character has its own account by default, and a setting keeps one account active on every character you play.

Muster

Call a spontaneous meetup with a map location and watch the RSVPs land. Your contacts always see yours, anyone can find the public ones, and it leaves every list when the muster ends.

Yellow Pages

Eorzeaโ€™s classifieds: venue nights with schedules and an Open Now switch, gil services with a fixed, starting or on-request price, and recruitment for statics, free companies and venue staff. Ads run seven days and can be renewed.

MogCast

Cast a video, YouTube included, onto a screen you place in the world. Watch parties stay in sync, approval lets you choose who joins, and local files play for viewers who have the same file.

Gamba

A play-money casino on Aether Coin: blackjack at shared tables, live bingo halls, a communal wheel, slots, scratch cards and a free daily spin. You can check settled rounds in the app for 7 days, and coin cannot be bought or cashed out.

What our servers see

This is that conversation as our server stores it: sender, time and ciphertext. It also sees who is in the chat, message sizes, reactions and read status, and text you translate or report arrives readable.

Your phone has a number

Share your number in game, like handing over a calling card. ChocoChat contacts are added by number, and a chat opens once you have both saved each other's number.

Install

Set up from inside the game.

If you play through XIVLauncher, you are four steps away.

  1. Open Dalamud settings

    In-game, run /xlsettings and open the Experimental tab.

  2. Add the repository

    Under Custom Plugin Repositories, accept the warning, paste the repo URL and press +, then Save and Close.

  3. Install the plugin

    Run /xlplugins, search All Plugins for Aetherphone, and install.

  4. Pick up your phone

    Type /phone to open it. The online apps ask you to sign in the first time.

Common questions.

What is Aetherphone?

Aetherphone is a free plugin that gives your character a smartphone in game, with social apps, private chats, an arcade and everyday tools. Its online features run on Aethernet, our own service, which you sign in to with your character.

What do I need to use it?

FINAL FANTASY XIV on PC, started through XIVLauncher with Dalamud turned on. Nothing else.

Is it free?

Yes, completely. There are no ads and nothing to buy. If you support the project on Patreon, you get a few cosmetic extras, like a badge and an avatar frame, while your membership is active.

Who makes Aetherphone?

Aetherphone was created by XeldarAlz and is built and run by a team of around 50 people, including developers, designers, artists, moderators and testers.

How is AI used in Aetherphone?

Mostly for writing code: AI tools write much of it, and every change is reviewed and tested in game before release. AI is also used for translations, both for the Translate button and for the app's other languages, which people review. Nothing you see inside the phone is AI-generated. The AI usage page has the details.

Why isn't it in the official Dalamud plugin list?

Aetherphone is shared through its own plugin repository, which you add in Dalamud's settings. Dalamud shows a warning for any plugin added this way because the Dalamud team doesn't review them. Aetherphone's code is public, so anyone can check it.

How do I know I have the real Aetherphone?

Install it only from https://aetherphone.net/repo.json. Copies from anywhere else aren't official, even if they use the Aetherphone name.

Is it safe to install?

Aetherphone is open source, so anyone can see exactly what it does on GitHub, and every release is built from that public code. It never asks for your Square Enix password.

Can I get banned for using it?

It's possible. Square Enix's User Agreement doesn't allow third-party tools, and Aetherphone is one. The XIVLauncher team says it has no reported cases of players banned for using Dalamud plugins, but plugins from outside its official list are used at your own risk. The usual advice: don't talk about plugins in game.

Does it change my game or play for me?

No. It doesn't touch your game files and doesn't play for you. It only does something in game when you ask it to, like sending a chat message or a party invite, apart from the idle animation, which you can turn off.

Are my messages private?

Yes. Private messages are end-to-end encrypted, so only you and the people in the chat can read them, not even us. The exceptions are a message you choose to report or translate, and the short intro you send with a Velvet request. In the rare chat where someone has no encryption key, the phone marks it Not encrypted, and its messages are stored readable on our server. Voice calls are encrypted too, though not end-to-end, and they're never recorded.

Is my content used to train AI?

No. We don't use your posts or messages to train AI, and we don't share them with anyone for that. Moderation is done by real people.

What information do you keep about me?

Your character's name, home world and Lodestone ID, so we know the character is yours, plus what you post and send. We never ask for your email, password or real name. The Privacy Policy has the full details.

Can people find out which character I play?

Mostly no. Other players see your handle and display name, not your character. Your character's name shows in two places: in Muster, between a host and the people going, and in ChocoChat, to your contacts until you set a display name.

Can strangers message me?

It depends on the app. In ChocoChat, someone can only reach you if you've both saved each other's number. On Aethergram, messages from people you don't know go to Requests. On Velvet, you choose who can send you an intro: everyone, friends or no one.

Where is my data stored?

On Aethernet's servers. Everything travels over encrypted connections, the servers are protected against attacks, and your data is backed up every day.

Has there ever been a data breach?

No. We've never found any unauthorized access to Aethernet's data. We also keep very little that could leak: no passwords, emails or payment details, and private messages are stored encrypted, except in the rare chats marked Not encrypted. If anything ever affects your data, we'll let you know.

How do I delete my account?

In the plugin, go to Settings โ€บ Account โ€บ Delete account. It's immediate and erases your profile, posts, photos and messages, apart from a few safety records described in the Privacy Policy. Uninstalling the plugin alone doesn't delete your account.

How old do I have to be?

At least 13 to use Aethernet, and 18 or older for Velvet.

How is moderation handled?

By real people. Moderators review what gets reported and remove anything that breaks the rules. Serious or repeated problems can lead to a suspension, and you'll always get a notice explaining which rule was broken.

What can I report?

Posts, profiles, private messages, meetups and Yellow Pages ads. If you report a message, moderators see that message and up to five before it, and nothing else from the chat.

Can I appeal a decision?

Yes. Open a ticket on our Discord server or email contact@aetherphone.net, and tell us what was removed and why you think it was a mistake.

What is Velvet?

Velvet is the 18+ app for meeting other adults. You browse profiles and send a short intro, and a chat only starts if the other person replies. You choose who can send you intros, and you can hide your profile from Discover.

Is Gamba real gambling?

No. Gamba uses Aether Coin, which you earn by playing and taking part. Coin can't be bought with real money or cashed out, and it only buys cosmetics and Gamba chips.

Does it work on the Chinese game client?

Yes. You sign in with your Rising Stones profile instead of the Lodestone, and every app is available.
